It will be the largest and most expensive training facility in the NFL, as the Charlotte Panthers unveiled details and renderings of their new Rock Hill training facility and team headquarters, expected to open in summer 2023.
At 622,654 square feet, the new Charlotte Panthers training facility will be the largest training complex in the NFL, outpacing the Dallas Cowboys’ Ford Center at the Star (510,000 square feet), the Las Vegas Raiders training facility in Henderson (323,000 square feet) and the Minnesota Vikings’ TCO Performance Center (277,000 square feet).
According to a fact sheet released by the team and architectural firm Populous, “the Carolina Panthers Rock Hill Development is an innovative mixed-use, pedestrian friendly community anchored by the practice facility, headquarters offices, and sports/entertainment venue with emphasis on retail/entertainment/media productions, hospitality, employment, research and development, residential dwellings, indoor and outdoor recreation, and open space uses.”
The complex is designed for a 240-acre site adjacent to I-77 in Rock Hill, S.C. It will encompass more than just the training facility and team headquarters, including:
- Outdoor practice fields and one 5,000-seat stadium, which in total can also be utilized to host multiple high school football and soccer games, including three natural grass and one synthetic turf
- Indoor facility to host athletic events and games, concerts and corporate events, with seating for 500 and sporting a synthetic turf indoor field
- The indoor and outdoor areas will be separated by two 90-foot wide by 80-foot tall sliding doors
- An orthopedic sports medicine facility
- Corporate offices
- Residential space
- Retail stores
All in all, the Panthers and owner David Tepper are investing a billion dollars into the development of the complex.
The 240 acres will not be totally developed; plenty of green space and parkland, including over 2 miles of bike trails, are part of the design.
