Delaware Stadium Renovation Construction Set to Begin Soon

Delaware Stadium Whitney Athletic Center rendering

Construction on a Delaware Stadium renovation is set to begin soon, with the project including an athletic center and other upgrades.

The University of Delaware is planning to begin construction after this season on a $60 million overhaul that is focused on the stadium’s west side. As part of that project, a new facility named the Whitney Athletic Center will be constructed outside the stadium’s west side and be connected to the venue. The Whitney Athletic Center will feature several amenities, including new training space, a wellness center, a student success center, and more.

Within Delaware Stadium, there will be several upgrades. All new chairback seats will be installed in sections C, D, and E, while the renovated west side will also include improved concession and restroom facilities, club seating, and a renovated press box. Delaware is moving forward with plans to begin construction after the 2018 season, and complete the full project in phases. The new seating will be in place by the start of next season, with the construction schedule slated to conclude when the Whitney Athletic Center is completed in the summer of 2020. “We’re gonna dig dirt after the football season is over,” UD athletic director Chrissi Rawak told The News Journal….

The university had announced in November 2017 it would renovate the West (home-side) stands at Delaware Stadium with improved seating, provide luxury options and build a modern structure for media and coaches’ booths.

Just outside the stadium on the west side and connected to it would be a 90,000-square-foot structure housing a wellness center, athletic training, sports medicine, nutrition, sports psychology and strength and conditioning facilities to serve UD student-athletes.

It was christened the Whitney Athletic Center after a $10 million gift from 1980 graduate and former UD golf team member Ken Whitney and his wife, Elizabeth.

Delaware played its regular-season finale on Saturday. It is set to play a FCS Playoff road game this coming Saturday, when it will travel to Harrisonburg, VA to face James Madison University.
