Cardinal Stadium Expansion Takes Shape for Opener

With University of Louisville football’s home opener on Saturday, construction crews have been working to wrap up the Cardinal Stadium expansion project.

For the last several years, Louisville has been planning an expansion project that affects the stadium’s north end. The approximately $63-million renovation will enclose the north end zone, while adding new seating options to the stadium and improving team facilities.

Construction crews have been at work in recent weeks to put the finishing touches of the expansion in place. Louisville has expected that the expansion will debut in time for the 2018 season and, while some work on the football facility will continue over the coming weeks, the university anticipates being able to show off the major results of the renovation at Saturday’s home opener against Indiana State. More from the Courier Journal:

There were anywhere from 125 to 140 workers on-site, with plans to have some people work through the weekend (but not on Labor Day), [Louisville athletics spokesman Kenny] Klein said.

“We’ll be ready to go by our opening game,” he said. “Like any construction project, getting to that final stage is always a challenge, but it always seems to come together.”

The expansion adds about 6,000 seats to Cardinal Stadium, including expensive and exclusive field-level suites, premium boxes and club seats, among other amenities.

The final work that needed to be done included finishing up construction on the field-level suites, sprucing up the concession stands, giving the new club areas a final paint job and tuning the sound system, Klein told the Courier Journal.

The Cardinal Stadium expansion follows some recent trends by acting as a project that simultaneously addresses team and fan amenities. Premium seating and several other fan experience upgrades are major focal points of the project, as is an improved football facility that includes a modern weight room, locker room, meeting spaces, and players’ lounge. Kickoff on Saturday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
