Construction has begun on a new Buffalo Bills stadium, as the NFL team begins work on a facility located near the team’s current home in suburban Orchard Park.
After an agreement was reached with the state and Erie County in early May, the Bills moved forward on final design elements as well as the development of the club’s stadium experience center. Site prep is now underway after a ceremonial groundbreaking.
The 62,000-seat open-air stadium, which will be built on a 242-acre site, will cover approximately 1.35 million square feet. It will be the biggest project ever built in Western New York, carrying a cost of $1.5 billion.
The construction of a 75,000-square-foot ancillary building and demolition of the current stadium are also part of the site’s related development. Completion is scheduled for July 2026 so the new stadium can open its gates for the start of the 2026 NFL regular season.
The new facility will also be known as Highmark Stadium, as the team announced a new naming-rights deal with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield of Western New York. For now, the new stadium will be referred to as “New Highmark Stadium” until the completion of the construction in 2026 before switching over to “Highmark Stadium”–the same name of the current Bills home across the road.
