In a major sign of the facility’s name change, the University of Louisville has removed Papa John‘s signage from Cardinal Stadium.
Last month, the university announced that the name of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium would change to Cardinal Stadium, an announcement that came amidst controversy surrounding remarks by Papa John’s founder John Schnatter. Forbes reported that Schnatter used the N-word during a conference call in May. He confirmed to Forbes that he had used the racial slur, apologized for the remark, and resigned as chairman of the company.
That prompted many to call on Louisville to drop Papa John’s from the name of its football facility, and the university followed through on those calls. Papa John’s signage was removed from the stadium this week, and the university is now calling the facility Cardinal Stadium. More from the Courier-Journal:
Signage from John Schnatter’s pizza company was removed from the University of Louisville’s football stadium Wednesday, several weeks after it was revealed the pizza mogul used a highly offensive racial slur.
Two days after the news broke, university President Neeli Bendapudi said the football facility would be renamed Cardinal Stadium, effective immediately, and they would no longer use the “Papa John’s moniker.”
Prior to this name change, Cardinal Stadium had been known as Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium since its opening in 1998.
