Las Vegas Stadium Construction Making Progress

Las Vegas Stadium rendering

The future home of the relocating Oakland Raiders is taking shape, as the ongoing Las Vegas stadium construction process continues to make progress.

Officials broke ground last fall on the new $1.8 billion Las Vegas stadium. Located west of Mandalay Bay, the facility is currently scheduled to open in 2020 for the relocating Raiders and will also become the home of UNLV‘s football program.

It appears that the construction process has made steady progress. Cranes will soon be appearing on the site, while it was recently reported that the Raiders have spent more than $172 million of their commitment to the project. More from the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

As of mid-May, more than 11 percent of the concrete had been poured for the stadium in areas where 1 million cubic yards of dirt — more than 35,000 double truck loads — have been excavated.

More than 20 cranes, some capable of lifting more than 1,000 tons and reaching more than 600 feet high, will soon be on the site.

The Raiders recently reported the team has spent $172.4 million, 19 percent of its commitment, on the stadium project. Another $43.6 million, or 22 percent of the total commitment, has been paid by the NFL’s G-4 loan program, and $30.6 million, or 4 percent, of the public’s $750 million contribution has been spent to date.

The stadium is slated to seat 65,000, and will likely be used at some point in efforts to lure major events to Las Vegas. The new stadium will not be hosting the Super Bowl in 2023 or 2024–with those years recently awarded to Arizona and New Orleans, respectively–but it appears likely that Las Vegas will be a destination for the Super Bowl further down the road.
