Legion Field UAB

Birmingham Alliance of American football team has been added to the upstart league, and will begin play during the inaugural 2019 season.

The Alliance of American Football (AAF) is set to debut in 2019 as a new spring professional football league. Birmingham, AL will be one of the cities that fields a team in the circuit, with the club’s initial seasons to be played at Legion Field.

Long term, however, the Birmingham club is expected to move into a new stadium that is being included as part of a master plan for the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. It is currently expected that the Birmingham AAF team will play at least two seasons at Legion Field before moving to the new stadium after its completion. More from AL.com:

The yet-unnamed Birmingham franchise will play five home games at Legion Field for at least two season before moving to the new stadium downtown, according to the mayor’s office….

The head coach of the Birmingham franchise is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

Birmingham would join a contingent of Southeast AAF clubs that includes Atlanta, Orlando, and Memphis. In addition, the league has announced teams for Salt Lake City, Arizona (which will play at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe), and San Diego. The league is expected to have eight teams competing during its first season.
