Hughes Stadium Demolition Underway

Hughes Stadium

Hughes Stadium is coming down, as crews have begun the process of demolishing the former home of Colorado State University football.

The football program moved into a new on-campus football stadium last year, making Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium obsolete. Plans to demolish the facility have been underway for some time, as the Colorado State University System Board of Governors voted last fall to move forward with a demolition. With that decision, it was expected that the university would either sell the property or enter into a long-term lease as a way of pursuing redevelopment.

That process is now underway, as crews have begun the demolition of Hughes Stadium. As expected, the university will be pursuing redevelopment of the site down the road. More from CBS4:

In a statement issued to CBS4, the university confirmed plans to develop the property. The university said they planned to either sell, or lease, the land for development, pending public input.

The 160-acre property is expected to be cleared, and ready for possible sale, by the end of November 2018. Crews were expected to recycle as much of the old facility as possible.

Hughes Stadium originally opened in 1968, and hosted Colorado State football program through the 2016 season. The football program played its first game at the new stadium last August, marking the beginning of an era at a facility that provides more modern features when it comes to football facilities and fan amenities.
