Neyland Stadium Renovation Could Begin Summer 2018

Neyland Stadium

Tennessee could begin a $340-million, multi-phase renovation to Neyland Stadium in the summer of 2018, according to the latest plan.

Major renovations have been discussed for Neyland Stadium, and Tennessee is presenting some details as to how that plan could unfold. The first phase of upgrades will start next summer, with the round focused heavily on the south end. Among the many projects during that process, the south concourses will be expanded and renovated, along with the addition of premium seating, exterior improvements, and upgrades to the concessions.

All of the work from phase one is scheduled to be completed in 2020, and it would be followed by a second phase. That part of the project would lead to technology upgrades, changes to the east and northeast concourses, and a new entrance in the northeast corner. The complete renovation is estimated for a 2021 conclusion. More from The Knoxville News-Sentinel:

UT Knoxville Athletic Director John Currie will present the updated plans to the board’s Athletics Committee at 3 p.m. Thursday in Hollingsworth Auditorium at the UT Institute of Agriculture. The plans will then be considered by the full board Friday.

This is the first time a total cost estimate for the project has been made public. The $340 million figure includes a $74 million increase from projected costs for Phase I of the project.

Phase I was originally estimated to cost $106 million but is now estimated at $180 million. The updated plans will include some visual differences, to be presented to the committee Thursday, said Assistant Athletics Director for Media Relations Tom Satkowiak.

The overall cost of the project, however, is $10 million less than was originally projected, according to materials prepared for Thursday’s meeting.

The project has several steps to go through before construction can begin. First, it must be approved by the board of trustees. Should it move forward from there, the State Building Commission would then have to sign off on the renovation.
