Qualcomm Stadium Naming Rights Bids Due Friday

Qualcomm Stadium

Qualcomm Stadium‘s naming rights are currently up for grabs, with bids due on Friday, September 1, months after the previous agreement expired.

Back in June of this year, it was revealed that the City of San Diego and Qualcomm did not renew their naming rights agreement for Qualcomm Stadium–the current home of San Diego State University football, that is also known as being the former host facility of MLB’s San Diego Padres and the NFL’s San Diego Chargers. Qualcomm originally became the naming rights partner in 1997, but is not expected to submit a bid to retain that role.

Once Friday’s deadline passes, a review process of the bids will begin. More from The San Diego Union-Tribune:

Duke Little, Fox Sports College Properties general manager handling the process, said he will review the bids over the weekend and meet with city officials Tuesday to discuss next steps.

“There’s been a consistent level of interest from start to finish and a lot of interesting conversations,” Little said. “I don’t know if they will turn into bids or not.”

He said he has received a few bids already and more could be received by the deadline. Friday falls 12 days after the stadium’s 50th birthday, Aug. 20, 1967, when the Chargers played their first game in the $27.7 million facility. (And lost to the Detroit Lions, 38-17, before a near-capacity crowd of 45,988.

“It could be like Christmas — is it coal or is it gold?” he said.

The naming rights agreement is slated to run through December 31, 2018. SDSU has an agreement to use the facility through its 2018 season.
