Mercedes-Benz Stadium Roof to be Open on Sunday

The roof at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium is expected to be open on Sunday, when the Atlanta Falcons play their first game at the facility.

For Sunday night’s matchup against the Green Bay Packers, the roof at the retractable-roof facility is expected to be open. This plan is contingent on the weather for that evening, but should it come to fruition, it will mark the first event at the new facility to be played with an open roof.

The Falcons last played an open-air home game on December 15, 1991, when they closed out their run at Fulton County Stadium before moving into the Georgia Dome for the 1992 season. The final game in the Georgia Dome was Atlanta’s 44-21 victory over Green Bay in last January’s NFC Championship Game. The Georgia Dome is scheduled for implosion on November, 20, 2017.

Work to fully automate the roof will continue throughout the fall, but has progressed well allowing it to be open for next Sunday’s game.

In addition to serving as the home of the Falcons, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is also the new facility for MLS’ Atlanta United FC, which debuted at the venue on Sunday. The stadium hosted two pre-season games for the Falcons in August. Sunday’s regular season opener will air on NBC as part of the network’s Sunday Night Football coverage.
