ASU Planning Next Phase of Sun Devil Stadium Renovations

Arizona State University is proposing another round of upgrades at Sun Devil Stadium, possibly adding to a multi-phase overhaul of the facility.

The makeover to Sun Devil Stadium has been unfolding for the last several years. ASU began its first round of renovations after the 2014 season, and additional work has been completed in subsequent years, including the installation of a new videoboard prior to the 2017 campaign. Another major phase could begin late this year and be completed in 2019, depending upon an upcoming decision by the Arizona Board of Regents.

For the next phase, ASU is proposing to complete infrastructure upgrades while installing new premium seating and expanded restrooms. In addition, the upgrades would lead to the connection of the south end zone and the main concourse. That round, scheduled to begin after the conclusion of the 2017 season and be completed in June 2019, is estimated at $38.9 million and places the total cost of the renovation at $307 million. The regents are expected to vote on the proposal this week. More from The Arizona Republic:

Once everything is finished, “the overall fan experience should be a whole lot better,” said Lorenzo Martinez, associate vice president for finance and administration for the Arizona Board of Regents.

The regents are scheduled to discuss the stadium renovation during a committee meeting on Wednesday and expected to vote on Thursday during the board’s meeting at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Once the regents give approval, Martinez said ASU officials then have the authority to sign construction contracts and begin the third and final phase of construction.

Previous upgrades to Sun Devil Stadium have been aimed at improving amenities such as seating and technology. Sun Devil Stadium originally opened in 1958.
