Los Angeles Chargers Make Preseason Debut at StubHub Center

StubHub Center Chargers

NFL action was on display at the StubHub Center over the weekend, when the Los Angeles Chargers played their first preseason game at the stadium.

For the Chargers, the long road to their forthcoming stadium in Inglewood is running Carson’s StubHub Center–a venue that opened in 2003, and is best known as the home of MLS’ LA Galaxy. The first NFL preseason game at the facility took place on Sunday, with the Chargers hosting the Seattle Seahawks.

Since it has a fixed capacity of 27,000 and is designed with soccer in mind, the StubHub Center offers unique confines that the Chargers will hope to take advantage of in the coming years. Stadium officials also believe that the StubHub Center, which did receive some renovations to accommodate the NFL, will offer the Chargers a chance to different themselves in a busy Los Angeles market. More from The Los Angeles Times:

AEG President Dan Beckerman, whose company owns StubHub Center and the rest of the 125-acre sports complex, sees this as more than a “cute” option. He said the Chargers have spent more than $10 million to meet the NFL’s requirements.

“We’ve always thought this was an opportunity to do something special and do something unique,” Beckerman said. “It’s a way for the Chargers to differentiate themselves in this market in a very intimate setting. We’ve been talking about it for a really long time.”

That intimacy will be a key selling point for the Chargers, who will play here for the next three seasons while Rams owner Stan Kroenke is constructing his vision in Inglewood, a $2.6-billion palace that will house both teams.

The reported attendance for Sunday’s game was 21,054. On the field, the end result was a loss for the Chargers, who were defeated by the Seahawks by a final of 48-17.
