Though U.S. Bank Stadium might be getting most of the attention, it is not the only state-of-the-art facility planned by the Minnesota Vikings.
On Tuesday, the Vikings broke ground on a brand new training facility in Eagen. Built at the former site of the Northwest Airlines headquarters, the facility follows some of the latest trends in the NFL, combining modern training space with mixed-use development.
A few more details have come out about the headquarters, which is set to open in 2018. Twin Cities Orthopedics (TCO) has agreed to a naming rights partnership with the Vikings. With this deal in place, the facility will be dubbed the Twin Cities Orthopedics Performance Center and TCO will construct a medical clinic on the property. That agreement runs for 20 years.
Tuesday’s ceremony featured team and Eagen officials, plus NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and several members of the Vikings. The mood was rather celebratory. More from the Star Tribune:
Privately funded by team owners Mark and Zygi Wilf, the Eagan complex will become the team’s new home after the 2018 Super Bowl when for the first time in a decade, the team’s executives and practice facilities will be in the same complex.
The dirt-turning ceremony came a day before U.S. Bank Stadium was to open for a soccer match. The Vikings play their first preseason game there Aug. 28. Now operating from its 35-year-old Winter Park home in Eden Prairie, the team also uses office space in two other buildings, including one in downtown Minneapolis.
