Oakland city officials have quietly begun planning a new stadium at the Coliseum site capable of hosting two NFL teams, under the belief that Santa Clara voters will reject that city's plans for a stadium once they learn the NFL will force the Raiders and the 49ers to share a facility.
The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Board last week committed $125,000 for the study of a new stadium. Football has always been the driving force with the board: it committed to costly renovations of the stadium when the Raiders returned. The cost of the renovations: $20 million a year in bond repayments.
Such talk is preliminary, of course, and it's not a given the NFL will actually force the Raiders into a new Santa Clara facility if the Coliseum remains a viable venue.
