The National Hockey League -- and NBC Sports -- may not have known what they were getting into when they scheduled a New Year's Day game at Buffalo's
Ralph Wilson Stadium this year. The game was a ratings success and now they're lining up to be the next host.
Many thought that
Yankee Stadium might get the game as a farewell to the old joint that closes down this year. Bettman, however, is worred the old place might not be able to make the necessary adjustments. This week, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell offered up Penn State's
Beaver Stadium as a host venue for a game between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
This might be a tough offer for Bettman to resist. The game would likely beat the 71,217 attendance figure that attended the game in Buffalo. (Beaver Stadium is currently the largest capacity in the country at 107,282.) If you have seen any of the current Eastern Conference final games between these two teams, you know there is no love lost there. That isn't likely to change by next season. The biggest problem might be logistics. State College isn't an easy place to get to under the best of conditions. A game there on January 1 would be a logistical challenge. However, if it can outdraw a bowl game, the NHL and NBC will be interested.
