Ford Field Upgrades on Tap

Ford Field

Some changes are expected to take place at Ford Field, where the Detroit Lions are planning facility upgrades to overhaul the fan experience.

More details are set to be released on Wednesday, but the Lions are expected to unveil a project that will amount to about $100 million in changes to the stadium. The suites inside Ford Field will be renovated, while the team is also expected to roll out a series of technology upgrades that include new audio and video features.

The Lions are holding off on offering further details on the plan, but some information about the suite project has been reported. More from Crain’s Detroit Business:

Detroit-based Turner Construction Co. is the general contractor on the suite project, according to a city building permit issued Jan. 6. The permit is for “interior demolition only of suites and club spaces located on floors 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.” The estimated cost of the demolition is $750,000, according to the permit.

Detroit-based Rossetti Associates Inc. is the project architect.

Sources said part of the project is retrofitting the suites so that some of them will be capable of combining to create larger suite spaces.

Team President Rod Wood on Tuesday declined to discuss details about the $100 million in upgrades, which he announced in a letter sent to the season ticket holder base earlier this month. A private event for suite holders, some premium seat holders and corporate sponsors is scheduled for Wednesday evening, during which team executives are expected to unveil the plans for “New Ford Field.” Wood said he would comment at the event.

Some of the reported changes to Ford Field would follow trends around the NFL, as more teams are looking to invest in upgrades to amenities such as premium areas audio and video production. The Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens are undertaking similar enhancements before the 2017 season, which will follow the slate of projects–including those from the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers–that took place before the 2016 NFL slate.
