Los Angeles Rams to Break Ground on Inglewood Stadium

New Hollywood Park stadium

On Thursday morning, the Los Angeles Rams will break ground on their new stadium in Inglewood.

Set to open in 2019, the stadium–which for now is billed as City of Champions Stadium–will occupy the site of the former Hollywood Park racetrack. Along with the stadium, the Inglewood development will include a large entertainment complex that has several tie-ins to the NFL.

The stadium is highly anticipated around the NFL, not only for the fact that it marks a milestone for the Rams’ return to Los Angeles, but also for what it means for Los Angeles’ football history as a whole. More from the Los Angeles Daily News:

For the first time in Los Angeles history, a new stadium will be constructed specifically for the local professional football team.

Think about that for a second. When the Rams first arrived in Los Angeles in 1946, they played in the Coliseum, then 23 years old. And when the Raiders arrived in 1982, they played in a 59-year-old Coliseum. Both teams eventually fled L.A. out of failure to get new stadiums built.

None of that is a problem anymore with Rams owner Stan Kroenke plunking down more than $2 billion to build a state-of-the-art stadium in Inglewood.

The stadium already has at least one major event to look forward to, which is Super Bowl LV in 2021. The groundbreaking ceremony is set for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. PST.
