Chargers Pitch Fans on New Stadium With Emotional Video

Proposed San Diego Charger stadium

The San Diego Chargers are continuing their pursuit of a new downtown stadium and taking the pitch directly to voters with a slick four-minute video narrated by former Chargers great Dan Fouts.

The video, “The Heart of San Diego,” is designed to tug on heartstrings and push the vision of San Diego being a world-class city. Some of Fouts’ quotes from the video:

  • “The city, the Chargers and our loyal fans would have a new home that would be the first-of-its kind in the country; attracting the biggest events in sports and entertainment: and none bigger, of course than America’s national holiday, the Super Bowl.”
  • “Together we would finally complete the vibrant sports and entertainment district (downtown) that has been years in the making.  This downtown project could become the heart of the next generation, creating a new civic treasure for America’s Finest City.”
  • “A beautiful, state-of-the-art addition to the convention center would open doors to new shows, conferences and exhibitions.  The many terraces, balconies, and even a Sky Garden would inspire more visitors to come and celebrate San Diego’s enviable indoor-outdoor lifestyle.”

“This new facility will be much more than a stadium, it will be a world- class event center for San Diego that will create new convention space and attract new sports and entertainment events year-round,” says Chargers owner Dean Spanos at the end of the video. “I hope you’ll take some time to consider our proposal and know that we’re here to listen and respond.”

The Chargers are proposing a new stadium in the East Village seating 61,500, partially funded by a hike in the local hotel tax from 12.5% to 16.5%. Hoteliers have come out against the proposal, as have other groups involved in the local convention industry.
